6mo Baby Weaning Recipe: Soft and Nutritious Hainanese Chicken Porridge

Hainanese Chicken Rice is a classic dish that can be adapted for 6-month-old babies. This recipe is rich in protein from the chicken, carbohydrates from the rice, and healthy fats from the delicious chicken broth. Perfect for babies who are just starting solids or BLW!

Ingredients:

  • 50 grams of white or brown rice (choose organic if possible)
  • 50 grams of skinless chicken fillet (free-range chicken is recommended)
  • 300 ml homemade unsalted chicken stock
  • 1 clove of garlic (crushed, optional)
  • 1 stalk of spring onion (take the green part, finely chop)
  • 1 small piece of fresh ginger (crushed, for aroma)
  • 1 small piece of carrot (finely chopped)

How to make:

  1. Saute the fine ingredients

    • Heat coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil.
    • Saute garlic and ginger until golden brown for a more delicious taste and aroma.
  2. Cooking Steamed Rice:

    • Use chicken stock to cook the rice for a richer flavor.
    • Add spring onions to add natural aroma.
    • Cook until the rice becomes soft like steamed rice.
  3. Customize Texture:

    • For baby weaning: Puree the steamed rice and chicken with a blender or sieve until smooth.
    • For BLW tips: Serve the rice porridge in small balls and shredded chicken so that it is easy for the baby to hold. Use a more concentrated chicken broth so that the rice is not too wet and easy to hold.

Important Tips:

  • Use free-range chicken for a more savory taste and higher nutrition.
  • Use Homemade unsalted chicken broth for a more savory taste and higher protein content than instant broth because it is free from MSG and added salt.
  • Introduce ginger gradually in small portions to avoid your baby's sensitivity to new tastes.

Benefits of This Recipe:

  • Chicken: Source of protein and iron which are important for baby growth.
  • Rice: The main source of energy for active babies.
  • Ginger: Helps increase baby's immune system and adds natural flavor.
  • Carrots: Contains beta-carotene for eye health.
